Modern meshes. Old-school soul.

Retro Model Lab is a compact 3D workbench for turning static GLB models into retro assets. Compare your source with a live styled preview, shape the silhouette, crunch the textures, and export a model for your next small world.

PSX. Arcade. Low-poly. Three starting points, with hands-on controls to make the result your own.

Actual van before and after conversion: 5,306 to 1,595 triangles

Van and truck models are shown as workflow examples and are not included in the download.

What you can do

  • Reduce geometry: choose a triangle target and inspect the actual result.
  • Crunch textures: cap texture size from 32 to 1024 pixels, with nearest-neighbor sampling.
  • Shape the palette: quantize texture, material and vertex colors.
  • Dial in the retro feel: preview vertex snapping, affine texture warp, low-resolution rendering and ordered dithering.
  • Inspect every angle: linked before/after views, turntable, wireframe and camera framing.
  • Keep it local: no account, subscriptions, uploads or external services required.

Truck example: import, style and export; 2,186 to 612 triangles

From file to finish in three steps

  1. Import. Drop in a static GLB with embedded PNG or JPEG textures.
  2. Style. Pick an era, adjust the asset controls, and orbit to check the silhouette and seams.
  3. Export. Download a converted GLB, a styled PNG snapshot, or the model with a Three.js shader kit.

GLB model, PNG snapshot and Three.js shader kit exports

Know what travels with your export

ExportWhat is included
GLB modelReduced mesh, quantized colors, resized textures, nearest texture filtering and matte materials. Source units are preserved.
PNG snapshotThe styled view as an image, including the preview effects.
Model + shader kitGLB, preset settings, a Three.js WebGLRenderer material/postprocess helper and setup notes.

Runtime effects need a shader. Screen pixelation, vertex snap, affine warp and screen dithering are not embedded in standard GLB materials. Use the included Three.js helper to recreate them in a Three.js project. Unity and Godot shaders are not included.

Included in your download

  • The offline browser app: unzip and open index.html.
  • Three presets: PSX / 1996, Arcade / 1998, and Low-poly.
  • The original Rusty Van sample loads automatically when the tool starts.
  • A quick guide, license notices, and the editable app source as a separate ZIP.

Requirements & current scope

Version 0.1 beta / in development. Tested in a Chromium browser on Windows. Requires a modern desktop browser with WebGL 2 and WebAssembly. No installation or internet connection is needed after download.

  • Input: static GLB, up to 25 MB and 200,000 triangles, with embedded PNG/JPEG textures.
  • Not supported in this version: FBX, OBJ, Blender files, skinning, morph targets, instancing, Draco geometry and KTX2 textures.
  • Triangle reduction is a target, not a guarantee. UV seams and topology can limit the reduction; inspect the actual count and silhouette.
  • Materials are simplified to matte surfaces. Advanced source PBR effects, lights, cameras and animations are not exported.
  • No project autosave: export your results before closing the tab.

Commercial workflows welcome. Use your converted assets in personal or commercial projects when your input asset license permits it. The app and included Rusty Van demo are supplied under the MIT license; dependency notices are included.

A focused little tool for game jams, retro experiments and indie worlds.

Install instructions

Use on this page: click Run tool to start Retro Model Lab, then import a static GLB. Use the fullscreen button for a larger workbench.

Offline app: download RetroModelLab-offline.zip, extract all files, and open index.html in a modern desktop browser with WebGL 2 and WebAssembly. No installation or account is required.

The source ZIP is optional and is only needed if you want to edit or rebuild the app. For ordinary use, choose the offline app ZIP.

Input models must be static GLB files with embedded PNG or JPEG textures. Export your results before closing: there is no project autosave.
